Raleigh is the capital city of the state of North Carolina located in Wake County and is the second largest city in North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city's estimated population on July 1, 2008 was 401,552, over an area of 114.6 square miles, making Raleigh the 8th fastest growing city and the 45th largest city in the United States. Due to the abundance of oak tree Raleigh is also know as “the city of oaks”.
